Grants

The Community Foundation of Greater Rochester is a union of many funds created by donors to meet the changing charitable needs of the community. Since 1983, the Foundation has awarded over $4.6 million in grants and scholarships that have made a difference in the quality of life in our community. The Foundation administers over 100 funds and awards grants at various times during the year. While some donors recommend that their funds help specific charitable organizations, others make unrestricted contributions that allow the Community Foundation’s Board of Trustees to meet the most pressing community needs.

The Foundation welcomes grant requests, especially those that support innovative projects focusing on Culture, Community, Development, Education, Environment, Human Concerns and Youth. Grants are made to tax-exempt non-profit organizations located in or serving the citizens of the Greater Rochester area and to individuals for educational scholarships. The Foundation does not make grants for normal operating expenses or political campaigns.

At any time a Letter of Intent outlining the proposed project and the funds requested may be submitted. A staff member will contact you to discuss the proposed project and funding opportunities available. Many organizations have found that this informal approach gives them a helpful start in communicating their vision and also in understanding the Foundation’s role within the community. If the proposal meets the Foundation’s criteria and funding capability, applicants will be asked to submit the standard grant application.

The following are funding sources, each with a specific grant applications:

"The Community Scholarship Program"

After years of planning, several local organizations including the Community Foundation of Greater Rochester, the Rochester Community Schools Foundation, Rochester Rotary Club and the Rochester Kiwanis Club have developed the Community Scholarship Program for graduating high school seniors. One common application form allows a student to access all the scholarships from the above-mentioned organizations. Scholarships are based on criteria developed by the donors which may include academic promise, extracurricular activities, community service, musical, artistic and dramatic talent, tenacity, work ethic, and leadership. Some awards may also consider financial need. Distribution from scholarships funds is based on funds available and all  scholarships may not be awarded every year.

To be considered, students are required to submit an application, including general information and essay questions. Applicants must also include two Applicant Appraisal Forms and a high school transcript. The deadline for submission is March 7, 2008. Applications are available at high school counseling offices, at the Community Foundation, Rochester Community Schools Foundation, and online at: www.cfound.orgwww.rochester.k12.mi.us or www.rochesterrotaryclub.org.
